VIPKID 101- How to land an interview

The requirements to be considered for an online teaching position include:

  • Laptop/computer with reliable internet
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Some teaching experience
  • At the moment they are only hiring Americans and Canadians
  • ** As of December 2016** No minimum working hours required.  You don’t have to work a minimum of 7.5 hours a week. You choose  your schedule and the number of hours you want to work

Classroom Setup

It doesn’t get any easier or more fun than this. Simply read the teacher instructions, interact with the student and have a blast! Personally, I like to ask the target sentences but also try to extend learning by asking slightly more difficult questions. Students are super fun and make the time fly!

You choose your schedule by clicking on one of the boxes. When it turns green that means you have been booked! When it is white that means you have made yourself available but do not have a booked class yet. As you can see in the picture, I have all my classes booked but had a student cancel on Thursday at 12 pm (at the time of writing this, it is Tuesday). There is a 90% chance that a student will fill in the slot within the next few hours. If a student cancels within 24 hours (so if a student cancels one of my classes for today before the class starts) you still get paid! Awesome, right? As of right now I typically work 3-5 hours a day with a day off. When I travel I just reduce the hours I work. The schedule is super flexible and if you wanted, you could work while traveling! Currently, I bring in around $1500-$2000 USD with this schedule.

Pay Scale

The VIPKID pay is great! Average teachers make around $20 USD an hour. They start their teachers off at $7-$9 USD per 25 min class + bonuses.  The 2 bonuses are attendance and finish class type. The bonus for showing up to class (attendance) and for finishing the class are $1 dollar each per class (which means an additional $2 dollars per class).  So, if you show up, teach the class, and finish the class, that averages out to $9-$11 USD per class and $18-$22 per hour! Not bad for working in pj’s and at home, right?
